Katich wary of Pakistan under captain Afridi

The former BCCI President, Mr Sharad Pawar, on Thursday formally took over as the International Cricket Council President, succeeding Englishman, Mr David Morgan.

“Sharad Pawar, the former President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), assumed the role of ICC President in succession to Mr David Morgan at the ICC’s Annual Conference,” the ICC said in a statement.

Sensex rebounds, up 82 points in opening trade

The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex recovered by nearly 82 points in opening trade on Friday on emergence of buying by foreign funds in blue-chips, driven by recovery on Asian bourses.

The 30-share index, which had lost 191.57 points in the previous session, bounced back by 81.97 points, or 0.46 per cent, to 17,591.30 points. All the sectoral indices were trading in the positive.

Likewise, the wide-based National Stock Exchange’s Nifty rose by 23.05 points, or 0.43, to 5,274.45 points.

Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group’s market valuation soared 14 per cent in June quarter, the most among India’s top five business houses, making it the third most valued group in the country.

Anil Ambani-led Reliance ADAG’s market capitalisation was at Rs 1,42,380 crore for the three-month period ended June 30, 2010, higher by about 14 per cent compared to March quarter.

Haneef sues for defamation

Mohamed Haneef, the Indian doctor arrested after the London and Glasgow terror attacks three years ago, is suing former immigration minister Kevin Andrews for defamation and wrongful detention.

The bungled terrorism case saw him charged with providing assistance to terrorists involved in the London bomb plots.

The case collapsed soon after, but then-immigration minister Kevin Andrews proceeded to withdraw his visa.

Govt orders radar to track movement in thick forests

Up against the daunting task of tracking Maoists in dense forests with no suitable technology available in the global market, the government has directed the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to develop a foliage-penetration radar that can track movements, camps and even landmines located under thick vegetation.
