Newly-married Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who is celebrating his 29th birthday on Wednesday, arrived in the city with his wife Sakshi to a rousing reception from enthusiastic fans.

SC says dividend-stripping legal

In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court has ruled that taxpayers can legally reduce their liability through dividend-stripping, a term used for selling mutual fund units at a discount post-dividend.

An apex court bench headed by Chief Justice SH Kapadia has said there is nothing wrong in dividend-stripping after getting the tax benefits. The bench further said such dividend stripping after availing of the tax rebates cannot be termed as abuse of law.

Death for domestic help in Delhi double murder

A Delhi court on Thursday awarded death penalty to a domestic help for murdering an elderly woman and her 12-year-old grandson here in 2007 holding the offence fell in the category of “rarest of rare” case.

Additional Sessions Judge S K Sarvaria rejected the plea of leniency by the convict Mithilesh Kumar Singh and said “his act does not deserve lenient punishment”.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon recalls Sri Lanka envoy

The UN secretary-general has recalled his envoy to Sri Lanka and is closing an office in Colombo because of “unruly protests” over a war crimes panel.

Ban Ki-moon said it was “unacceptable” that Sri Lankan authorities had failed to prevent the disruption of the work of UN personnel in the country.

The demonstrations are being led by the Housing Minister, Wimal Weerawansa.
